"waking up dead"

When Jane woke up the next morning, she discovered
that she was dead.
At first, she observed her lifeless form
from above. Then she realized she could not call awake that heavy
mass lying apathetically there, legs spread slightly, hands flung
to the side, face slightly furrowed in a frown.
Jane laughed out loud at herself for looking
pensive even when nothing could possibly be bothering a corpse.
She looked wistfully down, missing the body for the laughter that
once came forth.
As an urge to pull away from the empty shell
rose, she resisted. She felt sorry for the homeless spirit bound
within the flesh encasement. The spirit that grew from a seed planted
by somebody else. A tumor that grew as the spirit became stronger,
feeding off should-have's and must-do's, its voracious appetite
sapping the remaining energies provided by the body. |
