Website Review: Defeating Depression

I’ve been asked to do a review of a website called “Defeating Depression“. Since I do not have the product that is sold through this website at the time of writing this review, I’m focusing the review on the website itself, and will not speak to actual product that I assume is a downloadable e-book on depression.

The website is a one-page sales page (also called a landing page) that is frequently used for ebook products. The page also uses the hook, “Do You Recognize the Early Warning Signs of Depression?” as an attention-getter. The website is by Jean Morgan, who has suffered from depression and offers information that alerts you to warning signs of depression.

First, there is always a personal story behind depression, and I’d encourage Jean to expand on her personal experiences in her website. This allows us to get to know Jean’s story and know Jean better. Adding a regularly updated blog may accomplish this.

Next, I recommend that Jean conducts an analysis of why a prospective customer would want to purchase an ebook on depression versus doing one’s own research on the internet. There are many active communities on the web targeted for depression, which means Jean may consider creating a value proposition that makes sense to pay for information instead of looking for it on the web. Jean does include bonuses like audio files and additional reports with the purchase, but it can be helpful to give a sample chapter of either the ebook or a sample audio file.

Finally, Jean may want to look at whether the one-page sales template is effective for her product. I know that these templates are widespread because they work (and it seems the longer the one page, the better it’s supposed to work). However, many people have become used to these one-page templates, at least I have, and immediately know this is a sales letter. Sometimes this can have the opposite effect on a prospective customer. Jean may want to consider other approaches that allow her to offer some value up front, let the readers know her better, and some may decide that what she is offering makes sense for them to buy.
