If punishment doesn't work, then I am speculating that stealing is somehow serving a critical need for your child, whether it's the act of stealing, or the perceived need of the items stolen. This may be the time to make an appointment with a counselor to get the root of the issue.

When I stole as a child (younger than your daughter), it was about collecting "stuff" like a security blanket. I often would not use the stuff that was stolen, but would put them all in a pile in a secret place where I would visit or find comfort in knowing that "the stuff is there". I was more attached to that feeling of security than I was to the actual stuff.

Please help your daughter by visiting a licensed counselor and let me know what you find out.

My 10 year old daughter cannot seem to quit stealing. Can you help me. How should I talk to her, the punishment doesn't seem to work and as soon as I think it will get better, it gets worse.
